I always hear people complaining about the “benefits” Aboriginal
peoples get from the government. But they always deny the
purpose of these benefits. The effects of the stolen generation
and mistreatment of Aboriginal peoples is still being seen
today. Generational trauma exists leading to mental health
issues that are disregarded and ignored every day by the same
people who call Indigenous Australians addiction prone and
lazy. Poor mental health leads to a plethora of issues including
addiction and is debilitating when kept unchecked. Racists deny
the existence of these problems because they want to paint
Aboriginal peoples in a certain light. Putting focus on bettering
the general mental health of Indigenous Australians includes
exposing corruption in systems that fail Aboriginal peoples and
acknowledge the importance of equity.
